How to calculate fence panels and posts
The formula
Panels = ⌈fence length ÷ panel width⌉. Posts = panels + 1 (for intermediate posts) + extra corner/end posts.
Why panels + 1 for posts?
Each panel sits between two posts. A run of 5 panels needs 6 posts — one at each end plus one between each pair of panels.
Corner posts
At every corner add one extra post. At the start and end of a run where no post is shared, add end posts. Most gardens need 2–4 extra posts on top of the panel count.
Pro tip: Bury posts at least one third of their total length underground. A 1.8 m fence needs posts at least 2.7 m long — 900 mm goes below ground.
