Keep leftover insulation — it is useful for patching gaps and future small jobs.
How to calculate insulation packs
The formula
Packs = ⌈(Area × (1 + waste %)) ÷ pack coverage⌉. Always round up — you can't use a fraction of a pack.
Which type should I use?
Mineral wool roll — loft floors and large open areas. Easy to cut and fit between joists. Mineral wool slab — walls, floors and between rafters. Holds shape better than rolls. Rigid foam board — under screed, external walls and where space is tight. Higher R-value per mm.
Do I need a vapour barrier?
In most cases yes — especially for floors and internal walls in cold climates. A vapour barrier prevents moisture from penetrating the insulation and reducing its effectiveness over time.
