How to calculate how many wallpaper rolls you need

The formula

Rolls needed = ⌈(Wall area × waste factor) ÷ area per roll⌉ — always round up.

Area per roll = roll width (m) × usable length per drop. With a pattern repeat, each drop wastes up to one full repeat.

How do I measure wall area?

Measure each wall: width × height. Add all walls together. For a standard 3 m × 4 m room at 2.4 m ceiling height, that's (3+4+3+4) × 2.4 = 33.6 m². Subtract large openings like doors and windows if you want a tighter number.

What is a pattern repeat?

When wallpaper has a repeating design, you must align each drop to the pattern. This wastes material. A 30 cm repeat on a 2.4 m wall means you cut from a 2.7 m section — losing 30 cm per drop.

How much extra should I order?

At least 10% for a standard room. Bump to 15–20% for complex patterns, difficult cuts around doors and corners, or an inexperienced paperhanger.

Pro tip: Note the batch/dye lot number on the rolls you buy. If you need to order more later, the colours may not match exactly.
