How to calculate appliance running cost

The formula

kWh per day = (watts × hours per day) ÷ 1000. Daily cost = kWh/day × price per kWh. Monthly cost = daily cost × 30.44. Annual cost = daily cost × 365.

Where to find the wattage

Check the label on the appliance, the plug, or the product manual. For appliances that cycle on and off (fridges, washing machines), the rated wattage is the peak draw — real average consumption is lower. Use the energy label kWh/year figure if available.

Common appliance wattages

Fridge-freezer: 150 W · Tumble dryer: 3000 W · Washing machine: 1000 W · Electric oven: 2000 W · Microwave: 800 W · TV (55"): 100 W · Laptop: 50 W · LED bulb: 10 W · EV charger (7 kW): 7000 W.

Pro tip: The biggest savings come from high-wattage appliances used often — tumble dryers, ovens and EV charging. LED lighting uses so little power that switching habits matter more than the wattage.
