Renovation Budget Planner

Enter the total budget you have available, allocate it across rooms and projects by priority, and see what remains after contingency. This tool plans your budget. It does not estimate renovation costs.

Quick Start

Step 1. Set
your total budget
Step 2. Add
rooms & projects
Step 3. Set
priority & planned spend
Step 4. See
what remains

Tip: Mark anything you could postpone as Nice-to-have or Optional. If real quotes come in higher than planned, these are the easiest places to review first.

Project

Total Budget

Contingency is reserved from your total budget before any room or project spend is allocated, so it is never counted twice.

Rooms & Projects

Add each room or project you are planning for, set a priority, and enter the amount you plan to spend. Planned spend is a number you choose, not a calculated cost.

How the renovation budget planner works

A planner, not an estimator

This tool starts from the budget you already have, not from a calculated market price. Enter your total available budget, add each room or project, assign a priority and a planned spend, and the planner shows what is left after your contingency reserve. If you do not yet know what your renovation is likely to cost, the Home Renovation Cost Estimator and the single-room calculators on this site build that estimate from area, trade rates and scope. Bring those numbers back here once you have them.

How the numbers add up

Your contingency reserve is calculated first, as a percentage of your total budget, and set aside before anything else. What remains is the amount available for rooms and projects. Fixed costs and every room's planned spend are added together to get your allocated total. Subtract that from the available amount and you get what remains: a positive number means room to spare, zero means the budget is fully allocated, and a negative number means the plan currently asks for more than you have available.

Setting priorities

Must-have covers the work the project cannot go ahead without. Nice-to-have and Optional mark spend you would like but could postpone or drop if needed. When the plan goes over budget, the Flexible Allocations section lists Optional and Nice-to-have items together so you can see where there is room to adjust, without the tool making that call for you.

What this planner does not do

It does not price materials, labour or trades, and it does not know your local market rates. Every amount comes from you. For a cost estimate built from typical trade rates, scope and market level, use the Home Renovation Cost Estimator or the room-specific calculators on this site.

Common questions

What is the difference between a renovation budget planner and a cost estimator?
A cost estimator calculates what a renovation is likely to cost. This planner starts from the budget you already have and shows what is left after you allocate it across rooms and contingency. If you do not know your costs yet, use the Home Renovation Cost Estimator first, then bring those numbers back here.
How much contingency should I set aside for a renovation?
10 to 20 percent is typical. Older properties or projects with structural work often need 20 to 25 percent. Pick a percentage in the Total Budget card: it is reserved from your total budget before any room or project spend is allocated, so it is never counted twice.
What happens if my plan goes over budget?
The status changes to Over budget, and the Flexible Allocations section lists your Nice-to-have and Optional rooms, sorted by priority, so you can see where there is room to adjust. Nothing is removed automatically.
Can I share or save my budget plan?
Yes. Share Link encodes your full plan into a URL you can send to yourself or anyone else involved in the project. Print / Save opens a printable version. Nothing is sent to a server: your plan stays in the link itself or saved locally in your browser.
